3 ways to find family-friendly adventures in Marshfield

Headed to central Wisconsin with the family in tow? You’re in luck—Marshfield is home to outstanding outdoor adventures, can’t-miss attractions, fun community events, and other great ways to entertain the whole crew. Here’s a closer look at what to see and do.

Get outside

One of Marshfield’s top family attractions is Wildwood Park & Zoo, which has been welcoming visitors since the 1930s and is home to twin Kodiak bears, cougars, bison, wolves, and a menagerie of other animals. (The park is also home to some great wooded walking trails.) The outdoor Wenzel Family Plaza hosts fun events like concerts (see below), but it’s also a great place to go and play in the splash pad in the summer. And while we’re talking about summer fun, Vandehey Waters Outdoor Aquatic Center is a great place to spend a sunny day, as it’s home to multiple waterslides, diving boards, a climbing wall, a current channel, and a lap pool.

Find fun indoors

There’s plenty to see and do inside on your trip to Marshfield, too. Melody Gardens Restaurant & Skateland not only serves delicious food—and ice cream—but it is also home to a skating rink and arcade. The Grey Dog Axe Throwing is open to kids ages 8 and up (kids 8-13 must be accompanied by a parent) and has arcade games and a pool table on site. Escape Room Marshfield is a fun family activity designed for two to eight players, and Board & Brush Marshfield lets you and your kids explore your creative sides with engaging art projects.

Mark your calendar

Wenzel Family Plaza hosts the Hub City Concert Series on Friday nights throughout the summer, and this year’s calendar includes acts like Newski and The Verve Pipe. Every July, Hub City Days brings the celebration to historic downtown Marshfield with a classic car & bike show, kids’ games, live music, and more. In September, the fun continues at Maple Fall Fest, which welcomes more than 150 arts & crafts vendors, kids’ games, art activities, and much more to Wildwood Park.

Where to cool down in Marshfield this summer

Sweltering in the summer heat? Don’t worry, Marshfield’s got plenty of places where you can beat the heat, from splash pads and pools to brewpubs and ice cream shops. Here’s a look at a few you shouldn’t miss.

Water, water everywhere

Kids—and kids of all ages—can make a splash at two fun attractions in Marshfield. Wenzel Family Plaza is a great community gathering spot in downtown Marshfield, offering fun events like live concerts and festivals throughout the year. On those hot summer days, it’s also a good place to cool off, thanks to a kid-friendly splash pad.

Vandehey Waters Outdoor Aquatic Center, 1900 S. Central Ave., is a state-of-the-art outdoor water complex that features multiple waters slides, diving boards, a current channel, a lap and recreation pool and even a climbing wall. The aquatic center is open daily from 11am to 7pm.

Ice cream & cold drinks

Visitors to Marshfield can also cool down with an ice-cold craft beer or a couple scoops of ice cream. The Blue Heron Brewpub—housed in a former ice cream factory, coincidentally—serves up refreshing pints of its flagship brands like Honey Blonde and Tiger’s Eye (an English mild ale), as well as seasonal selections like its Sour Sipper series (made with a Berliner Weisse base) or the Doghouse Daze farmhouse ale. Local favorite Nutz Deep II has 20 beers on tap and consistently tops the city’s Best of Marshfield lists for its burgers and fish fry.

Treat your sweet tooth at Hub City Ice Cream Company, which serves up more than a dozen flavors of Wisconsin’s own Chocolate Shoppe Ice Cream, as well as sundaes, floats, shakes, males, and slushies. Need a little caffeine boost? Head to Uptown Coffee Company on Central Avenue for iced coffee, mochas, macchiatos, and more.

Five things to see & do near Marshfield Medical Center

The world-class Marshfield Medical Center may have brought you to Marshfield, but there’s a lot to discover nearby in Wood County and Marathon County in central Wisconsin, whether you have an hour, an afternoon, or more. Here are five things you can do while you are in town that aren’t too far away.

Jurustic Park

The park is 5 miles from the clinic, a 9-minute drive.

This park is a wonderland of rusted metal sculptures, including whimsical dinosaurs, insects, dogs and cats. The place is sure to make you smile. A self-guided tour of the park’s walking path can take minutes, although if you have more time, there’s plenty to take in and don’t by shy to ask Clyde Wynia for a tour. Clyde created this fantasy world with his wife Nancy, who has jewelry for sale in the “Hobbit House.” If Clyde is around, he’ll give you a quick tour and a free sample of his quirky sense of humor. The park is located at 112021 Old Sugarbush Lane, Marshfield.

Wildwood Park & Zoo

The zoo is 3 miles from the clinic, an 11-minute drive.

Marshfield’s impressive Wildwood Zoo is a must-visit. The zoo can be explored on foot, or by car. If you feel like taking a short stroll, head to the Kodiak bear display. Twin bears Munsey and Boda play and tumble the day away and are always fun to see. Or check out the cougars Star and Thunder in their newly expanded home near the Welcome Center. If you opt to only take the zoo’s driving tour, you’ll still see impressive North American animals like wolves and bison. The zoo is located at 608 W. 17th Street, Marshfield.

Central Avenue shopping and dining

Central Avenue is less than a mile from the clinic. It’s a 3-minute drive or a 17-minute walk.

Marshfield’s stately brick downtown rose up after one of the biggest fires in state history swept through the community in 1887, destroying the wooden buildings. Today these historic brick buildings line south Central Avenue, housing a vibrant mix of shopping and dining establishments. It’s makes for a perfect morning or afternoon escape: lose yourself in a charming boutique or antique store, relax in a cozy coffee shop or comforting restaurant, or just take a stroll on Central Avenue’s broad sidewalks. You’ll find plenty of free street parking on and near Central Avenue.

McMillan Marsh State Wildlife Area

The marsh is 2 miles from clinic by car, about a 5-minute-drive.

Just outside Marshfield, this 6,500-acre public natural area is a destination for nature lovers. McMillan Marsh is a mix of wetlands, woodlands and grasslands, and it’s unpaved paths are ideal for a tranquil stroll. The marsh was once home to a sawmill, logging operations and a fur farm–but today you’re more likely to see a flock of geese or cranes skimming across the wetlands. Venture out as far as you like and return with the assistance of the trail map at the entrance. The trailhead into the marsh is located at 227 Mann Street, Marshfield.

The heart of Marshfield

Marshfield’s downtown is a mile from the clinic. It’s a 1-mile-drive or about a 22-minute walk.

Marshfield’s historic downtown is filled with stores, restaurants and attractions. Two signature spots are Upham House and Wenzel Family Plaza. Upham House is the former mansion home of Wisconsin Gov. William Upham. It’s open to the public Wednesdays and Saturdays from 1:30pm – 4:00pm and filled with memorabilia that tells the story of Marshfield’s past. Nearby, Wenzel Family Plaza is an outdoor green space and community hub that celebrates today’s families with outdoor concerts, mid-day food trucks in the summer and a water feature for the kids to cool off in and enjoy. There’s plenty of parking on the street near the mansion and plaza, which is located at 201 S. Chestnut Ave, Marshfield. In between the plaza and Upham House you’ll find Chestnut Center for the Arts, a performing arts venue that hosts regular events and arts programming in a historic church.  If you opt to walk downtown, swing through Colombia Park and check out the 1931 art deco band shelter.

Walk the Downtown Jurustic Trail

Thousands of visitors come to experience the whimsy of Jurustic Park each year. This amazing metal sculpture park, located just north of Marshfield, is surrounded by a mystical forested area, and even has an enchanting Hobbit House. But what many people don’t know is that some of the artist Clyde Wynia’s creatures have escaped and have hidden in Downtown Marshfield.

To help you find these zany creatures and discover some of Marshfield’s hidden gems for dining and shopping, we have created the Downtown Jurustic Trail. *This tour clocks in at just under 1.5 miles. Most people walking at a leisurely pace will take about 30-45 minutes to complete it (but we encourage you to stop and enjoy the sculptures, shopping opportunities, delicious dining options, and fun attractions along the way!)

View Downtown Jurustic Trail Map

  1. Kick off your adventure at home base: the Marshfield Area Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MACCI) & Visit Marshfield office building. This is a great place to grab a copy of the official Marshfield Visitor guide, if you don’t already have one. You can enjoy ample parking and a variety of great restaurants nearby if you’d like fuel up before hitting the Downtown Jurustic Trail. It’s here that you’ll meet Tillie, the first creature who, very slowly and steadily, made a new home amongst the rusty reeds.
  2. Take the trail north on Central Avenue, which Marshfield locals have dubbed “Main Street.” You’ll pass by Strohman Park, a beautifully landscaped firefighter memorial. Nestled near the towering structure of the Chestnut Center for the Arts are two more creatures, who like to say “whooo,” “mew,” and play a tune or two on a stringed instrument. While you’re here, check out the Chestnut’s offerings, including calendar of events, pottery studio, art class schedule, or art exhibitions displayed in their gallery.
  3. Delightful detour: follow the trail back to Central Avenue by way of the Wenzel Family Plaza. Depending on the time of day at the plaza, you’re likely to see children running through their water feature, morning people stretching on Yoga mats, a food truck feeding folk during the afternoon lunch rush, or live concerts and other entertaining events happening most weekends. If you’re looking to satisfy your sweet tooth before moving on, stop in at the 2 ½ Cups Cupcakery and Bakeshop. At the spot marked #3 on your map you’ll find a towering, metal turtle.
  4. Continue along the paved walking/ biking trail on East Veterans Parkway. You will pass by the Everett Roehl Marshfield Public Library and the Marshfield Veterans Memorial, showcasing paintings by local artists and a flag display, honoring heroes from the Marshfield area. Look up to see the largest, fire-breathing, winged creature on the tour trail (this fantastical fellow flew in to guard our fair city and hasn’t left since!). Snap a selfie with this scaly friend (#marshfieldmadenew), turn around, and head back to Central Avenue, where you’ll pass the Royal Tokyo Restaurant, housed in a historic train depot, and is a known as a popular dinner spot for Teppanyaki style group meals and the place to go for family celebrations.
  5. Turn down Central Avenue for more popular restaurants and shopping options, and make your way down to your next destination, Hardacre Park. Named after an influential mayor known for her leadership, you’ll find rusty creatures that swam to Marshfield during a great flood, probably thousands of years ago. You can also pull up a bench and view a painted timeline of Marshfield’s pasts and milestones in the surrounding murals. Next-door is a Marshfield staple, Crabby Dave’s, known to have one of the best brandy old fashioneds in town.
  6. Meander down a few more short blocks to Nutz Deep II, one of Marshfield‘s most popular restaurants and watering holes (with a wacky name, and seriously good burgers). The creatures here are some of the newest that just escaped Jurustic Park. Be careful – they may not be as used to close, human interaction as some of the other creatures on the tour.
  7. Cross Central Avenue to find your final stop, the Blue Heron Brewpub, another great place to grab lunch or dinner. You’ll love the modern, gastropub atmosphere in this former ice cream factory building. After finding all the creatures in the Heron, kick back and relax (maybe while enjoying a pint), and you’ll find yourself back at the start of your journey.

Be a good anthropologist and report your findings on the downtown trail back to us, so that creator Clyde from Jurustic Park can help track down these rusty creatures and try to return them to his park!

Four fun family-friendly activities to do this summer

Marshfield is a great place for a family-friendly getaway. Here are a few ideas on what to see and where to go when you head to central Wisconsin this summer.

Animals await at Wildwood Park & Zoo

Did you know that you can see Kodiak bears, cougars, bison, wolves, and other wild animals in central Wisconsin? Wildwood Park & Zoo was established in 1937 and has been wowing visitors ever since—stroll through the park to get up close and personal with the animals or enjoy the view from your car on the large animal drive. Be sure to stop in the Welcome Center, where you can see turtles, snakes, and lizards, as well as learning about the water cycle.

Every week through mid-August, the zoo hosts its free Wild Wednesday program, sponsored by the city’s Parks & Recreation Department and the Marshfield Zoological Society, where visitors can learn about everything from birds of prey to fossils.

Music and more at Wenzel Family Plaza

Located at Second and Chestnut Streets in downtown Marshfield, Wenzel Family Plaza has a splash pad that’s perfect for those hot summer days and hosts several fun events throughout the year. Don’t miss the Hub City Concert Series, where talented musicians hit the stage at Wenzel Family Plaza for good music and fun times on Friday nights in June, July and August.

See clever creations at Jurustic Park

Jurustic Park is one of Marshfield’s see-it-to-believe-it attractions. This sculpture park located 5 miles north of Marshfield is the brainchild of artist Clyde Wynia, who creates creatures of all sizes—everything from dragons to dogs to dragonflies—from scraps of discarded metal. Take a free tour and marvel at these larger-than-life creations.

History

All about the Upham Mansion

History lovers will find lots to explore in downtown Marshfield, from historic buildings that now house fun shops and restaurants to the lovingly restored home of Wisconsin’s third governor. Here’s a closer look at what visitors will find at Upham Mansion.

What is the Upham Mansion?

Upham Mansion, also known as the Gov. William H. Upham House, is the home of former Wisconsin Governor William H. Upham, was constructed in 1880 and currently serves as the headquarters for the North Wood County Historical Society.

Where is the Upham Mansion located?

The Upham Mansion is located at 212 W. 3rd St. in downtown Marshfield.

What makes Upham Mansion so notable?

The Upham Mansion is listed in the Local, State, and National Register of Historic Places and has been recognized as a classic example of mid-Victorian Italianate architecture. The house, built in the late 19th century, survived the Marshfield fire of 1887. Furnishings date from the late 1880s to the 1920s and include several pieces from Marshfield’s Upham Manufacturing Company.

Outside the home, the Heritage Rose Garden boasts more than 30 varieties of roses that include popular breeds dating back to time of the Roman empire.

The mansion also tells the story of one of Marshfield’s most important residents. In addition to being the third governor of Wisconsin, William H. Upham served in the Second Wisconsin Infantry in the Civil War and was injured and captured during the first Battle of Bull Run before graduating with honors from West Point in 1866. He moved to northern Wisconsin in 1869 and established several business ventures in the city, including a sawmill, a furniture factory, a grain elevator, a railroad, a power plant, a waterworks, a general store, and more. Upham played a large role in rebuilding Marshfield after the 1887 fire and served as city alderman, mayor, and clerk of the School Board. He served one term as governor (1895-97) before returning to Marshfield, where he continued to contribute to civic life.

Is Upham Mansion open to the public?

Upham Mansion is open for tours from 1:30 to 4pm Wednesdays and Saturdays. Admission is $2.

Tours are also available by appointment.

The Upham Mansion is also part of the city of Marshfield’s Upham Mansion Historic District walking tour, which includes the old First Presbyterian Church, the Marony Wheeler House, the J.B. Borden House, the C.J. Sparr House, the Burns House, Elsworth House II, and the Frank Upham House.

NEW: Dave’s Guitar Shop Open in Marshfield

Dave’s Guitar Shop will open a new location in March in Marshfield’s downtown!

Hub City Times, Mike Warren

MARSHFIELD — Dave’s Guitar Shop has opened a new location in Marshfield’s downtown.

Dave’s Guitar Shop has locations in La Crosse, Madison, and Milwaukee.

“Customers include guitar legends and recording artists such as Eric Clapton, Billy Gibbons (ZZ Top), Joe Walsh (Eagles), Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam), Vince Gill, Faith Hill, members of Pink Floyd, Little Big Town, Everclear, REO Speedwagon, and Def Leppard,” a shop release stated.

“However, Dave’s Guitar Shop doesn’t cater only to the rich and famous. With more than 2,500 guitars for sale, there is something for everyone.”

The store offers guitars and amps from Fender, Gibson, PRS, Hamer, Rickenbacker, Gretsch, Ibanez, G&L, Victoria, Vox, Peavy, Matchless, Crate, Savage, Ultrasound, Martin, McPherson, Larrivee, Taylor, Guild, Ovation, Alvarez, Washburn, and more, with “something for beginners, experts, and collectors.”

“We are so excited about this new location,” said founder Dave Rogers. “I was born and raised in Marshfield, so this new location is very meaningful to me.”

Rogers’ Marshfield connection grew even stronger by bringing on familiar faces from the local music scene, such as Scott, Rhonda, Zach, and Montana Smith, to work at the Marshfield location.

“Our whole family loves music, and we are just thrilled that Dave’s Guitar Shop is coming to Marshfield and that we get to work with them,” said Rhonda.

Dave’s Guitar Shop will open a temporary location next door to Uptown Coffee Company at 119 S. Central Avenue, Marshfield, while Chris and Erin Howard renovate 4,000 square feet for Dave’s Guitar Shop’s permanent Downtown Marshfield location. This permanent location is across the street from where Rogers bought his first guitar when he was 10 years old.

“We have always thought Marshfield’s downtown could become a tourist destination. Dave’s Guitar Shop is the kind of business that will draw people from hours away. This is going to be so great for our entire community,” said Erin.

“I of course had heard of Dave’s Guitar Shop before we started working with them,” said Chris. “But I didn’t know that Dave was from Marshfield. It literally gives me chills to think that he is returning to his childhood hometown.”

Rogers moved from Marshfield to La Crosse in the late 1970s, and in 1982 opened his first guitar shop in a 400-square-foot location that was previously a dentist office.

“While Rogers has remained true to his humble beginnings, his current Dave’s Guitar Shop in La Crosse features 21,000 square feet. People from all over the world come to buy, trade, sell, or just to marvel at the enormous inventory of guitars and amps. The La Crosse location also features Rogers’ ever-expanding personal collection of 700 vintage guitars and 200 amps. This priceless collection represents a lifetime of collecting guitars and is open to the public to view,” the release added.

Begin Your Wisconsin Outdoor Art Tour @ Jurustic Park

Find some laughs at marvelous metal creatures at Marshfield's Jurustic Park

Where to go: Head north of Marshfield to take in some unique folk art. Jurustic Park is a wonderland of rusted metal sculptures created by attorney-turned-artisan Clyde Wynia.

What to expect: Step into another world of whimsy and artistic delight. Heaps of rusted metal have been transformed into a dream world of placid turtles, sassy cats and playful dinosaurs. The creative genius behind Jurustic Park is an attorney-turned-artist named Clyde Wynia. If sparks are flying in his shop, he might be hard at work on his next creation, but when Clyde has a break, you’ll often find him greeting visitors and making them laugh with his artwork—and his jokes. Like the metal monsters he creates, Clyde is a work of art, and it’s hard to leave his world without a smile.

While you’re there: The pieces range in size from small insects to massive dinosaurs. Stop in The Hobbit House to browse the beautiful glass jewelry handcrafted by Clyde’s wife, Nancy. You may find a treasure to bring home!

The restaurant’s signature burgers are also amazing. Their flagship burger, the Nutz Deep Burger, is a can’t-go-wrong, but why not go big or go home? Take on The Pounder, two half-pound patties piled high with four cheeses, haystack onions, beef brisket, lettuce, tomato, sautéed jalapenos, a slab of Mexican cheese, and finished off with a chipotle cream sauce.

After dinner, relax in your hotel. Looking for a comfortable unique place to stay with a full menu of amenities? Hotel Marshfield won Best Hotel/Motel in 2021. Another great bet: The Holiday Inn & Conference Center, which is home to the recently renovated restaurant, The Rivers.

After lunch, head to these must-see foodie shops: Weber’s Farm Store and 2½ Cups Cupcakery & Bake Shop. Weber’s won Best Shop for Gifts in 2019 and sells an extensive line of cheese that’s produced at this fifth-generation dairy. Their selection includes lots of favorites, like 11-year cheddar and Parmesan merlot. 2½ Cups – Cupcakery & Bakeshop, located in the historic Downtown Historic District will have your mouth watering with gourmet cupcakes and a plethora of other sweet treats (can anyone say salted caramel)?

Saturday dinner
Wind down with a little Marshfield comfort food. According to the latest Best of Marshfield survey, the place to go is MoJo’s Pasta House & Cajun Cook Shack. This fast-casual family-owned eatery makes their Cajun and Italian entrees from scratch, fresh and to order. Bear-y Interesting Backstory

You don't have to travel to Alaska to get up close and personal with a Kodiak bear... we have TWIN Kodiak Bears right here at the Wildwood Park & Zoo!

Read on to learn how Kodiak bears Munsey & Boda came to live in Marshfield!

Bear Beginnings

In October of 2015, the Wildwood Zoo welcomed Munsey & Boda, twin Kodiak bear cubs from Alaska. However, their story started 5 months earlier, when the cubs’ mother was illegally shot and killed by an unguided hunter. Although brown bear hunting in Kodiak is open through mid-May, it’s never legal to kill a sow with cubs. At 4 months old, brown bear cubs are almost entirely dependent on their mother for food and protection, and only about half make it to adulthood.

With the sow dead, the cubs had almost no chance of survival in the wild. Luckily Tim, a guide from the Munsey’s Bear Camp, which provides family-friendly bear viewing and photographic experiences, had been watching them with a spotting scope. After discovering their mother had been shot, Mike Munsey contacted the Alaska Department of Fish & Game and was authorized to rescue the cubs.

Tim, along with Brandon and Harry, brought the cubs back to one of Munsey’s cabins, where they stayed overnight until biologist Nate Svoboda could reach them the following day. Svoboda found the cubs hiding under a bed in the cabin, exhausted and frightened, and accompanied them to the Alaska Zoo, where they were fed, cared for and nursed back to health.

Happy Homecoming

As one of the few zoos in the “lower 48” to be an adopted home to the Kodiak bear, Wildwood Zoo created an environment for our bears that rivals exhibits in much larger cities, such as San Diego or Milwaukee, using bridges to connect habitats in a relatively new design. A 15-foot-wide glass viewing window encourages up-close and personal bear encounters, and provides shade and shelter for visitors.

After the new JP Adler Kodiak Bear Exhibit was completed, and Marshfield welcomed the cubs to their new home, everyone in the community suggested names, and the top 6 were presented via survey to the public. Over 2,500 votes were received, with the overwhelming majority choosing Munsey & Boda, honoring Mike Munsey, who was instrumental in rescuing the cubs, and Nate Svoboda, the wildlife biologist who nursed them back to health.

Wildwood Zoo Hours
April 1 - Memorial Day Daily, 7:30am - 6:00pm
Memorial Day - Labor Day Daily, 7:30am-7:30pm
Labor Day - October 31 Daily, 7:30am - 6:00pm
November 1 - March 31 7:30am-2:30pm

LARGE ANIMAL DRIVE:  6:00 AM – 10:30 PM YEAR ROUND
WILDWOOD PARK:          6:00 AM – 10:30 PM YEAR ROUND

The zoo is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day & News Year’s Day.

We cannot guarantee that the bears will be available for viewing, due to feeding schedules or the bears deciding to play in their large natural habitat.

Here are some fun things you should put on your spring to-do list.

Find some laughs at Jurustic Park

Just outside Marshfield, you can step into another world.

Soak up the color at Mill Creek Gardens

Winter is just a memory at Mill Creek Gardens, a garden center that has a vibrant selection of flowering plants and vegetables. Mill Creek starts its own annuals from seeds and cuttings each January, so you can be sure to get the best quality. Find something for a window box, a hanging basket or a planter, or just take in the colors and smells of fresh spring flowers. New blossoms are opening daily.

Discover fresh finds on Main Street Marshfield

Marshfield’s historic downtown is home to stores filled with antique and vintage items. Whether you’re looking for early American dishes to dress up a special meal or some fresh discoveries for your turntable, you’ll find that the search is as rewarding as the finds.

Spice things up with dinner

All this fresh spring air might make you a little hungry. It’s nothing a taco can’t fix. Marshfield has some great south-of-the border dining options, including Casa Amigos Mexican Restaurant 2, El Mezcal and Taqueria El Sol. Attractions

Go wild at Wildwood Zoo

For more than a century, animal lovers have been able to see some incredible wild creatures at Wildwood Zoo. The zoo is home to nearly 20 exhibits that showcase some of North America’s most iconic wild animals. It draws more than 100,000 visitors a year, and the best season for experiencing the zoo has arrived. Here’s a quick guide to visiting Wildwood Zoo.

How can I visit the Wildwood Zoo?

There are multiple ways to explore the zoo. First, there’s a driving route that will allow you to see some of the zoo’s larger residents. The drive begins right off West 17th Street in Marshfield, near South Adams Avenue. This is a one-way road that loops past fenced areas containing bison, wild turkeys, white-tailed deer, elk and timber wolves. To see even more, including the zoo’s popular Kodiak Bear Exhibit, get out of the car and take a stroll. You’ll find parking areas on the north and south side of the zoo, off West 17th Street and South Roddis Avenue. The zoo can be experienced in as little as 15 minutes, although to appreciate the animals and read the signs, you’ll want to allow more time. Some people take their time, relax and spend a half day at the zoo. See zoo hours here.

What does the Wildwood Zoo cost?

It’s free, but donations are accepted.

What can I see at the zoo?

The newly expanded cougar exhibit, completed fall 2019, is 10 times larger than the previous facilities, with more natural surfaces and a public viewing area where visitors can see the zoo’s two cougars, Star and Thunder. The adjoining welcome center includes small animal exhibits, ADA-accessible restrooms and an interactive water education exhibit for children.

Other animals to see include fox, wolves, lynx, prairie dogs, owls, eagles, bison, elk, deer, turkey and of course, Kodiak bears.

What’s the most popular attraction?

The twin Kodiak bears (Munsey and Boda) are the stars of the zoo. They are part of a major exhibit that was added to the zoo in 2015. The 800-pound bears are still young and love to play—they wrestle, swim and simply have fun. Visitors will love the 15-foot wide glass viewing windows along with plenty of shade, while the bears love splashing in the recirculating pools, and crossing the covered bridge to explore an acre of enrichment grounds, which gives them room to roam and play.

What else is happening at the zoo?

Wild Wednesdays events happen throughout the summer. This free educational program is great for kids—it features professional animal handlers and some fascinating visiting creatures. The programs last 45 minutes and are held at Wildwood Station, 1800 S. Roddis Avenue. For information, contact the Marshfield Parks & Recreation office at 715-384-4642, ext. 0 or visit the zoo’s website or their Facebook page.

There are some great places to get outside and explore in Marshfield. Like hiking and biking? Head to one (or both) of the state wildlife areas nearby—the McMillan Marsh State Wildlife Area north of town and the George W. Mead State Wildlife Area to the northeast.

In the warmer months, grab some towels for the kids and head to the Wenzel Family Plaza for fun in the water feature or spend the afternoon at the newest outdoor aquatic center in Marshfield, Vandehey Waters (with a current channel, water slides, diving boards and more, the whole family will stay entertained).

Chow down at Scotty’s Pizza & Chicken, named Marshfield’s best pizza for several years running and in the 2020 Best of Marshfield Survey Awards. Be sure to try one of their specialty pizzas like the Broccoli-Bacon-Cheese or the Taco Pizza.

Day 3

Wrap up your trip with another great meal with an order from The Kitchen Table, which was selected as the best breakfast in the 2019 Best of Marshfield Survey awards.

Visit one of Marshfield’s most iconic (and photogenic) attractions—Jurustic Park, home to larger-than-life sculptures of creatures that were “discovered” as remnants from the “Iron Age.” Walk the grounds of this free attraction north of the city to explore the finds of amateur paleontologist Clyde Wynia.

In addition to the metal sculptures, Clyde’s wife, Nancy, runs the Hobbit House, where visitors will find creations including hot glass, fiber and life-size soft sculpture, as well as handmade jewelry.

Jurustic Park is open most of the spring, summer and fall until 4:30 pm.

If your kids prefer a more active pursuit, head to the Marshfield Skatepark, located at Braem Park. The park isn’t open to just skateboarders, either—inline skaters and BMX riders will find plenty to enjoy as well.

History

Central Avenue Historic District

For more than a century, Central Avenue has been the commercial heart of Marshfield. In 1993, the Central Avenue Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Today, it remains one of the city’s special features, a place where stately brick buildings house a modern blend of restaurants, shops and businesses. Here’s a quick guide to exploring the district.

About the Central Avenue Historic District

This district comprises the commercial center of Marshfield. The collection of buildings in the 100, 200 and 300 blocks of S. Central Avenue are important to the area’s retail and commercial history. They include a variety of architecture, including Italianate, classical revival, art deco, and early twentieth century commercial styles.

What you’ll find

Every building on this street has a story and they are fascinating to uncover. Step inside 2 ½ Cups Cupcakery & Bakeshop at 126 S. Central Ave, and you’ll find yourself in a building that was constructed at the turn of the century. It first served as a saloon and store before becoming the Majestic Hotel around 1912. The building later became a restaurant and today it’s a charming bakery that produces delicious custom cakes, brownies, candies and of course, cupcakes. Most of the buildings on Central Avenue are open to the public, so it’s possible to step inside and take in a bit of the history—and perhaps a cupcake.

Other businesses in and around the district include restaurants like China Chef and Daily Grind and stores like, Endless Designs, Merle Norman Cosmetics & The Day Spa Boutique and Thimbleberry Books.
